Pupil Premium & Sports Premium

Please find details below of the school’s approach to using the Pupil Premium grant. The impact of the identified approaches is reviewed on an ongoing basis by the school and the Pupil Premium link Governor.

What is the Pupil Premium Grant?

Pupil Premium is additional funding available from the Government and is used to enable the school to provide additional provision for pupils who are entitled to it. The school applies for the Pupil Premium based on those children eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) at any time in the last 6 years, as well as pupils under Local Authority Care (LAC) and adopted pupils. This allows us to provide those children with the same opportunities as their peers.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. The School will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support and challenge pupils to whom the Pupil Premium has been allocated.

At Howden Junior School we have a range of actions and approaches which are used to support children in achieving the best educational outcomes. The Pupil Premium funding therefore is used to pay for, as appropriate:

  • 1 to 1 tuition in English and maths
  • Small group work
  • Specific intervention programmes e.g. supporting children to overcome problems caused by dyslexia.
  • Booster classes in English and Maths
  • Additional Teaching Assistant support
  • Social language groups

Sports Premium

The Government are spending over £450 million on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools by allocating extra funding directly to primary headteachers.

The premium must be used to fund additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport, for the benefit of primary-aged pupils, to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles.

Previously our development focus has been to make the development of staff subject knowledge and skillset, ensuring the planning and delivery of our PE curriculum meets the diverse needs of our pupils. This was supported through the hiring a PE specialist to provide training, challenge and direction to class teachers, building a legacy of high quality PE provision. This has been successful, with full details available below in the review documents.

Our headline approach during 2019 and 2020 is to focus on break times and lunchtimes. The school is engaging in a project with Doncaster Rovers Sports Partnership to  maximise the impact of break times and lunchtimes on the development of social skills, but also on physical activity; getting children to move more, more of the time. This project will begin in earnest in February 2020, although work is already underway to identify our school’s particular needs. The Sports Champions are taking a lead on this development, along with a dedicated team of adults who are going to embed play more effectively.
