At Howden Junior School, we want our children to be curious about the world around them, and encourage them to seek answers to the scientific questions they pose. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity. Our Howden Science curriculum endeavours to teach the essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
Intent
Our Science curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge. It also enables children to become enquiry-based learners.
Implementation
- Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum.
Teaching and Learning should show progression (in both skills and knowledge) across the key stage within the strands of Science, making links to other curriculum areas using a thematic approach wherever possible.
Though practical investigative opportunities, children should be encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observation, planning and questioning in order to explore the world around them and become independent enquiry-based learners.
Key vocabulary is taught for each topic, and children are encouraged to apply their written, mathematical and verbal communication skills to answer scientific questions.
- Educational Visits
Where applicable links to Science will be made to develop the children’s learning, through external visits or inviting relevant visitors into school.
- British Values and SMSC
Children will learn and revisit the importance of our world and how it should be treated
Children will appreciate the significant impact of scientists past and present.
Impact
- Children will enjoy and engage with our high-quality Science Curriculum
- Children are expected to make at least expected progress from their starting points.
